I was recently writing a letter of recommendation for a former colleague. While doing so, I started to reflect on how we built a content strategy for a rapidly growing brand with an equally quickly growing marketing team.

When I joined the team, marketing was made up of product marketing, digital marketing, email marketing, acquisition marketing, and separate advertising and brand departments. I was hired to build out a social media strategy and hire a team that could implement it. I ultimately ended up being responsible for social media and our entire content strategy.

But I don’t have kids.

So, it makes sense to ask, why do I care about this?

Here’s the truth: I saw a trend growing amongst friends and colleagues where many smart hardworking women I know were seemingly getting “stuck” or limiting their career aspirations.

When trying to figure out why, I discovered a much bigger issue. Women are still being pressured to choose between family and career. And it starts with parental leave.

There’s never a bad time to solve real problems, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be difficult.

Sometimes being the co-worker and leader you want to be is easy and natural. And sometimes there is a global pandemic.

When the future feels uncertain, people tend to do one of two things. They either feel powerless and fall into a mindset that work doesn’t matter or they throw themselves into work and try to control everything.

My personal tendency is to do the latter. Intellectually, I know that some things are out of my control, but I want to do anything and everything I can to plan for every potential outcome.

Parallels between being on parental leave and social distancing

As I’m scrolling through Instagram I come across a post that compares the challenges of stay-at-home orders to parental leave. Nothing about it surprised me.

It reads, “Dealing with this quarantine is similar to your baby’s newborn stage. It’s survival mode, you’re in your pajamas all day, your hair is dirty, you may burst into tears at any moment, you don’t know what day it is, and you don’t know what to expect with each passing day.“
